Learn more about canine exposure
Canine exposure is a specialized dental procedure designed to facilitate the eruption of impacted canines. This treatment is typically performed on children aged 12 to 15 and involves carefully revealing the impacted tooth, encouraging it to assume its rightful position within the dental arch.
Canine exposure is a collaborative effort between periodontists and orthodontists and helps encourage favorable outcomes.
Canine teeth, also known as cuspids or eye teeth, are the sharp, pointed teeth located on each side of the mouth, just beyond the incisors. Canines are crucial for tearing food and also play a key role in maintaining proper alignment and spacing of the other teeth. They have the longest roots of any human teeth and are usually the last to be lost.
Impaction of canine teeth occurs when these teeth fail to erupt through the gums and become stuck either in the jawbone or in the gum tissue. This can be due to overcrowding, early loss or retention of baby teeth, or unusual growths blocking the tooth’s path.
Treating impacted canines through exposure and orthodontic guidance helps to ensure that the canines can function properly, contribute to a balanced dental arch, and maintain the integrity of the patient’s bite. Additionally, early treatment can prevent more serious issues such as damage to adjacent teeth, development of cysts, or complications from more invasive surgical procedures required if the condition is left untreated.
Why Canine Exposure?
Enhanced Alignment
Guides impacted teeth into their correct position, leading to improved dental alignment.
Reduced Discomfort
Impacted teeth can cause discomfort, pain, and even gum inflammation.
Optimal Oral Function
Properly positioned canines contribute to better bite function, chewing, and speaking.
Prevention of Complications
Impacted canines can lead to misalignment, cysts, and potential damage to adjacent teeth.
